Chapter 8 / Selecting and Integrating WWW Resources, Including Designing Online Instruction

Q:  Why is regular maintenance vital to a quality website?
A:  Your time is valuable, and with regular maintenance you will not have to recreate your website.  A few steps now will save you time in the long run:  1)  Check Your Site:  Have someone prof-read your site.  Make sure all your links are linked where you want them to go.  Chose appropriate graphics.  Remember anyone and everyone can view your site.  2)  Update Your Site:  Information and technology is always changing, make sure your site changes with the times.  Check your links to make sure that they are still going where you want them to go.  3)  Improve Your Site:  Change your graphics, links, fonts, or whatever it takes to get viewers to your site.  No one wants to see the same old stuff time after time.  Keep it interesting!

  1. Proper maintenance of a website is very important. I have been in online classes that have links to outside sources that are no longer valid. It can be very frustrating to search for the article when the link does not work. Regular checking of these sites ensures that users can easily navigate your site.

  2. I think the most important to maintaining a quality website is updating the site. Like Christie, I have been on websites given by teachers or in online courses with links to a web page that is no longer active or the information given is out of date or correlates with a past year. Teachers need to make sure they update!

  3. I agree with all of you about updating sites. I get so frustrated when I visit a site that offers a link or video and it has moved or is no longer available. I also believe that content should be updated and revised as needed. As things change, if your information is outdated or wrong, your website loses credibility.

  4. You are right - you have to mix it up a little. It is very important to keep resources and links up to date. No one wants to click on a link that doesn't go anywhere. I hate when that happens. Also, with new information being discovered and presented all the time, it is especially important for teachers to update their websites on a regular basis.
